On the Journey Devotional
Scripture: John 4:34 — “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.”
Lately, I’ve been challenged by how easy it can be to let comfort, routine, or even other people’s expectations shape my decisions. It’s easy to stay in what’s familiar—to avoid awkward conversations, difficult people, or situations that stretch me. But when I look at Jesus, I see something completely different.
When Jesus says, “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God,” He reveals something deeper than discipline—He’s describing relationship. Everything He does flows from living in step with the Father.
That’s why, in John 4, Jesus is able to cross so many barriers without hesitation.
He speaks to a Samaritan woman—crossing cultural division.
He engages her in a spiritual conversation—crossing religious tension.
He meets her one-on-one—crossing social norms.
None of this was random. Jesus wasn’t reacting to the moment—He was responding to the Father.
Because His identity was rooted in the Father, He wasn’t controlled by expectations, reputation, or comfort. He was free to love fully, speak truth honestly, and pursue people others avoided.
And what drove Him? Obedience wasn’t a burden—it was His nourishment.
While others were focused on staying “right” or staying comfortable, Jesus was focused on bringing life. He didn’t ignore truth, but He delivered it in a way that invited transformation instead of shame.
The same invitation is extended to us.
When we live from the Father’s heart, everything begins to shift:
* We stop seeing labels and start seeing people
* We value transformation over image
* We become willing to step into uncomfortable spaces
* We join what God is already doing instead of clinging to our own agendas
Following Jesus isn’t just about doing the right things—it’s about living from the right source.
Reflection:
* Am I more concerned with comfort and image, or with bringing life to people?
* Where might God be asking me to cross a barrier to reach someone?
* What would it look like today to “join the Father” instead of just managing my own plans?
Prayer:
Father, draw me deeper into Your heart. Let my life be shaped by what You are doing, not by what feels safe or familiar. Give me the courage to cross barriers, the wisdom to speak truth with grace, and the hunger to find my satisfaction in doing Your will.
